Electric Fireplace Insert vs. Wood-Burning Fireplace: Which Is Right for Your Family?

That fireplace you never use? It might be the best spot in your house, and it's just sitting there dark.

For a lot of families, the fireplace is more decoration than gathering place. Wood is a hassle, the chimney hasn't been checked in years, and by the time dinner's done, everyone scatters to separate rooms. Another winter goes by, and the cozy nights you pictured keep getting pushed to "someday."

So this week, we're answering the big question: should you stick with a traditional wood-burning fireplace, or switch to an electric fireplace insert? We'll cover heat, cost, mess, safety, and how to measure, so you can pick what's right for your family.

The Quick Answer

If you love the ritual of building a real fire and don't mind the cleanup, a wood-burning fireplace is hard to beat for atmosphere. But if you want cozy nights with one click, no chimney, no wood, no smoke, and no ash, an electric fireplace insert is the easier everyday choice, and it can bring an unused fireplace back to life.

Do Electric Fireplace Inserts Actually Heat a Room?

Yes, but think "cozy zone," not "whole house."

Most electric inserts plug into a standard 120V outlet and run at about 1,500 watts, the same as a typical space heater. That's enough to warm a living room, bedroom, or den, usually up to about 400 sq ft.

Where they shine:

  • Taking the chill off one room without turning up the whole-house heat
  • Turning a drafty, unused fireplace into something you'll actually use
  • Flame-only mode, so you get the glow all year without the heat

Where they don't:

  • Replacing your furnace
  • Heating open floor plans or multiple rooms

Electric Insert vs. Wood-Burning Fireplace: Side by Side

Electric Fireplace Insert Wood-Burning Fireplace
Getting it going Press a button on the remote Build and light a fire, then tend it
Heat Steady warmth for one room (up to about 400 sq ft) Strong heat up close, but much of it escapes up the chimney
Mess None: no ash, soot, or smoke Ash cleanup, wood storage, and smoke
Maintenance Occasional dusting Regular chimney inspection and cleaning
Safety No open flame or sparks; many have cool-touch glass Open flame, sparks, and hot surfaces
Cost to run Roughly 20–25¢ per hour on high at typical electric rates (1.5 kWh × your rate) Cost of firewood, plus chimney upkeep
Year-round use Yes, with flame-only mode Mostly cold months
Power outages Won't work without power Works without power
Atmosphere Realistic flames, glowing logs, and crackle sounds The real thing: crackle, smell, and flicker

Which One Fits Your Family?

A wood-burning fireplace is a good fit if you enjoy building fires, have a reliable wood supply, keep up with chimney care, and want a backup heat source during power outages.

An electric fireplace insert is a good fit if your fireplace mostly sits unused, you want cozy nights without the work, you have little ones or pets and want to skip open flames, or you want the look of a fireplace in a room that doesn't have one.

How to Measure for an Electric Fireplace Insert

The #1 mistake people make with fireplace inserts is buying the wrong size. Here's how to get it right in 5 minutes:

  1. Measure the front width. Measure across the front of the fireplace opening, side to side.
  2. Measure the back width. Most fireplaces get narrower toward the back. Measure the back wall too.
  3. Measure the height. Measure from the floor of the firebox to the top of the opening, at the front and at the back.
  4. Measure the depth. Measure from the front edge straight back to the rear wall.
  5. Use the smallest numbers. Your insert has to fit the tightest spot, so go by the smallest width, height, and depth you measured.
  6. Check for an outlet. Most inserts plug into a standard 120V outlet. Make sure one is close by, ideally inside or right next to the fireplace.

Tip: the insert's trim (the surround) covers small gaps around the edges, so the insert itself just needs to fit inside the opening.

How Does Your Family Get Cozy?

This week we asked our community how they get cozy: wood fireplace, unused fireplace, gas fireplace, blankets with no fireplace, or the backyard fire pit. If your answer was "unused fireplace" or "no fireplace," an electric insert might be exactly the upgrade you've been waiting for. Tell us your answer in the comments!

Frequently Asked Questions

Can an electric insert replace my furnace?
No. It's designed as supplemental heat for one room, up to about 400 sq ft. It's perfect for warming the room you're in without heating the whole house.

Do I need a chimney?
No. Electric inserts don't produce smoke, so there's nothing to vent. If you're installing one in an existing fireplace, closing the damper helps keep drafts out.

Can I use it without the heat?
Yes. Flame-only mode gives you the glow year-round, even in summer.

Is it safe around kids and pets?
There's no open flame, and the Presto has cool-touch front glass. As with any heater, keep blankets and toys a safe distance away and follow the manufacturer's instructions.

The Bottom Line

A wood-burning fireplace gives you the real thing, with the work that comes with it. An electric fireplace insert gives you the cozy glow and real warmth with none of the hassle, and it finally puts that empty fireplace to use.

This winter only comes once. Make it the cozy one. 🧡
